Paro Festival

The Paro Tshechu is one of Bhutan’s most vibrant and sacred five-day festivals, held annually in March or April at the historic Paro Dzong. It features mesmerizing, centuries-old masked dances (Cham) performed by monks and locals in traditional attire to honor Guru Rinpoche. The festival culminates in the early morning unveiling of a giant thangka, the Guru Thongdrel.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Paro

Alt: 2200m

On arrival at Paro International Airport, a Keys to Bhutan representative will receive you and transfer you to your hotel. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the country, and the Drukgyel Ruin Dzong at the north end of the valley. Evening explore tiny Paro town.

Day 02

Paro Festival

Whole day attend the annual Paro Tshechu, Bhutan's largest and most resplendent festival. Masked dancers perform ritualized reenactments of mythical struggles between good and evil forces, accompanied by Tibetan musicians and the antics of sacred clowns (atsaras).

Day 03

Paro Festival

Morning drive to the base for the hike to Tiger’s Nest, the most revered temple in the country that literally hangs on a granite cliff overlooking the Paro valley. Most of the day will go on the hike. The hike is a moderate to challenging trek leading to the iconic Paro Taktsang Monastery. The hike is approximately 7km round-trip, with an elevation gain of about 518 meters. It typically takes 5 to 6 hours to complete, including a stop at the halfway cafeteria. The trail offers stunning views of the Paro Valley and features prayer flags and a scenic waterfall. If you have energy visit the Kichu Lakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan which marks the beginning of Buddhism in the country. Hot stone bath available at an additional cost. Evening relax at your hotel.

Day 04

Paro - Thimphu

Alt: 2300m

Drive to Thimphu, the capital city. Visit Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the 3rd King, and the Buddha viewpoint for magnificent valley views. Continue to Changangkha Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the valley.

Day 05

Thimphu - Punakha

Alt: 1350m

Morning visit the traditional Hand Made Paper Mill, School of Arts and Crafts where students learn 13 different arts used predominantly in Bhutan and Folk Heritage Museum. Lunch in the town and drive to Punakha through Dochula pass (3200 mts) If the weather permits one can enjoy a spectacular view of the highest mountains of Bhutan at a sight that stretches almost 180 degrees. Walk around the 108 stupas and continue to sub tropical valley of Punakha.

Day 06

Punakha Halt

Morning drive to visit Punakha Dzong (fortress), which houses the most elaborate temple in the country. This is a must-see fortress in Bhutan and a fine example of Bhutanese rich art and architecture. After the visit, if you are in the mood for a nice half-day hike, you could start the hike right above the dzong with a short steep climb offering a great view of the valley with houses spread all around and the never-ending turquoise river and its sandy river bed. This trail is also popular for mountain biking. The hike ends through the farm field crossing the newly constructed bridge, where your car will be waiting at the other side of the river. If you choose, the entire activity can be done on foot from your hotel. After lunch, could go for an hour hike (uphill) to the temple of Khamsum Yuley Lhakhang overlooking the paddy field and the snakelike river bends. Or could relax on the balcony of the hotel to enjoy the view and the nature.

Day 07

Punakha - Paro

Time: 3.5 Hrs

Retrace the drive back to Paro. Visit the National Museum, exploring collections from natural history to religious paintings. Evening chance to see a traditional archery match. Farewell dinner at the hotel.

Departure

Morning transfer (10 mins) to the airport for your departure flight. Your guide will bid you farewell at the airport.
